Rev. Carolyn Bratton

CarolynBrattonRev. Carolyn Dewberry Bratton was born one of eight children to Mr. Joe and Rev. Hattie Dewberry in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.  She was educated in the Rutherford County Public School System.  She is a 1978 graduate of Chase High School and continued her education at Gardner-Webb College in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1982.  After graduation, she was employed by A & E, Inc. for one year and then gained employment with A.G. Industries (a subsidiary of American Greetings, Inc.) for nineteen years.  At the time of her departure from American Greetings, she was working as the purchasing manager.

Noted for her basketball talents and ability, she was inducted into the Chase High School and the Gardner Webb College Athletic Hall of Fame.  She was honored as one of the distinguished alumni of Gardner Webb College for her labor of ministry and community service. She is a 2012 Cum Laude graduate of Hood Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity degree. She is currently in the Doctor of Ministry Program at Hood Theological Seminary, Salisbury, NC.

Carolyn is married to Reverend Nathan Bratton and they have two sons and two daughters.  They also have two grandsons and three granddaughters.

She received the call to preach the gospel at an early age, but yielded to the call in 1995.  She preached her trial sermon in June 1995 and in June 1997, she was appointed to her first pastoral charge by Bishop Cecil Bishop.  She served Young’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Mooresboro, NC for five years.  She was ordained a deacon in June 1998 and then received her elder ordination in June 2001.  She was appointed as pastor of Shiloh AME Zion Church in Mt. Holly, NC in 2002 and served this congregation for six years. In 2008, she was appointed as pastor of Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church in Salisbury, NC and served there for 9-1/2 years. The Lord has truly blessed her ministry. She was appointed in February 2018 to St. Stephens AME Zion Church in Gastonia, NC.

Rev. Bratton is very active in the Western NC Conference. She serves as the Chief of Protocol; the first female to hold this position.  She has also served as conference secretary and on many other committees, inclusive of the district finance and budget committees.

She served on the Salisbury-Rowan Human Relations Council and the Covenant Community Connection.  As a member and chairperson of the Human Relations Committee, she served as co-chair of the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday  Committee.  She was also affiliated with the Interdenominational Fellowship (IDF) and active with other community efforts. She is the secretary of the Hood Theological Seminary Alumni Association.

Rev. Carolyn Bratton is a born-again child of God and loves to give God all the praise.  She delights in seeing souls saved.  Her favorite passage of scripture is, “Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.”  (Romans 12:21)
